Chasing Owls

That "hoo-h'HOO--hoo-hoo" we've been hearing at dusk and dawn comes from a pair of Great Horned Owls that probably have a nest somewhere in the trees of the Pines or in one of the Gormans' century-old oak trees. We saw the female today, perched near the top of a tall oak on Pleasant Lane. After a few hoots, she flew off to a tree in the Gormans' woods (first photo). Wow, that wingspan is amazing! She continued to call to the male (second photo), who answered and flew to a nearby tree. The male has a deeper voice, and you can hear the difference when they call to each other. Great Horned Owl pairs mate in December, are usually sitting on eggs in January and tending hatchlings in February. So...bundle up, take a walk and listen for them. They'll be spending the winter with us.
