Open water

One of the joys of living on Spring Lake is watching the lake change from day to day throughout the four seasons. And seeing open water as winter morphs into spring is always a sweet harbinger of the beautiful days to come and a reminder that we'll be seeing many species of water birds as they make their way back to Canada and beyond…Grebes, Buffleheads, Mergansers, Wood Ducks, and Scaups. In my memory, this has always been a late March event, yet today I spotted several Scaups mixed in with the many geese we've been seeing for most of the winter. As you watch the lake fully open, be on the lookout for these "early birds" with good news: Spring is just around the corner. But now that I've said that, I'm reminded that historically, in Wisconsin, the only month without recorded measurable snow is August. Still, cheers for the Scaups that stopped by the lake today. A welcome sight!!
