Northern Shovelers

Last year we didn't see Northern Shovelers on Spring Lake until April 24, yet here they are on March 13, sharing our appreciation for the early arrival of spring. Four males and four females (one of the males found better foraging near the island and escaped the group photo session).
These are dabbling ducks with long, spoon-shaped bills with over 100 fine projections along the edges--for straining food from the water. And...Northern Shoveler pairs are monogamous. Every time we've seen them on the lake, they've been evenly paired.
