The 30% survival rate is a reality. Just one baby robin remains in the safety of the nest now. As I daily observed the two hatchlings, the difference in their sizes seemed odd. They had hatched just a day apart. Both were growing, but one was growing by leaps and bounds and the other was growing slowly, dwarfed by its sibling. Soon only the larger baby was visible in the nest--so big that I wondered if the smaller one might be buried beneath. But I later found its remains in the grass, about 50 feet from the nest. Failure to thrive? Sad. Survival of the fittest can be harsh.
