A month behind
This year's spring migration seems to be running about a month behind last year's. It was April 2 that we saw Red-breasted Mergansers on Spring Lake last year. Today's sighting, though welcome, confirms the late migration. How they know that Wisconsin's northern lakes haven't completely thawed is a mystery. They just do, it seems. A source in Boulder Junction estimates that the May 4 fishing season opening will be on ice. So the ducks are still traveling. This pair of mergansers can be seen diving the lake today in search of fish and crayfish. Watch for them!
