Winter Bird Feeding

The recent frigid temps and snowcover have made this a challenging winter for birds. Suet is an excellent food to offer them at this time because of its super high-caloric content, which is invaluable in keeping their bodies warm. Peanuts, with their high protein and fat levels, are another great choice.
Remember to keep your bird feeders filled and consider adding this DIY suet wreath (from Martha Stewart) to your feeding options this year. You'll need suet, bird seed, roasted unsalted peanuts, and cranberries (optional). Martha uses a bundt pan to form the wreath but any metal container will work. You'll find her instructions and video here.
And if it's time to buy more birdseed, check out this list of top ten foods for winter bird feeding from Bird Watcher's Digest. Apparently, black-oil sunflower seed is "the hamburger of the bird world."
