Hello Neighbors
I am using this forum to report on a gray fox that was in our neighborhood, apparently poisoned. He was found by P.J. Novsam. She made numerous calls before she was able to find someone to come. For your future reference - Daniel Hansen of Animal Logistics Wildlife Management, came and picked up the animal. It died before it made it to the Lake Geneva rehabilitation facility.
I (Michele Caskey) have contacted the DNR and have been working with Brad Latza. He has taken the fox from Animal Logistics and sent it to the lab to determine the type of poison used.
Brad is willing to meet with us to talk about nuisance animals and how to safely handle them and who to call.
From a bit of research on my end I have learned that poisoning mice in you home or yard can lead to poisoning foxes or owls as the animals take the carcasses and either eat the or feed them to their babies. Second generation poisons that are on the market now are so potent, one poisoned mouse can take down a fox.
Even if the poison was used in your home, the mice often find their way outside to die. There they can be found by fox, owls, raccoons and your family dogs. They really are not safe to use.
If you find a dead mouse, like I have in the street near my home, they are best bagged and thrown into the garbage. If you cannot do it, please call me, I will do it.
Grey fox are quite rare in our area. We were quite fortunate to have that kind of animal in our area.
More info about meeting with Brad later.
