Watch out for the painted turtles crossing the street. I was out on my bike today and saw one smashed one and 3 others, I helped out. Each was about 4" long.
I spoke to a turtle expert a few years ago and he said that when you see them trying to cross a street, pick them up and take them across in the direction they are going. Even if it is away from the pond. They are going to lay eggs and will go in that direction even if you stop them.
The painted turtles are harmless. If you grab them in the mid-section they will not hurt you.
This is a painted turtle and what I have seen in our pond.

This is a snapper - be VERY careful handling this. I would not recommend any handling.., if you do use gloves, pick up in middle far away from the mouth. Very dangerous bite!
I have never seen one in our pond.

Happy helping!
