Backyard bird of prey...
The Great Horned Owls aren't the only raptors enjoying the bounty of Spring Lake. This young Cooper's Hawk landed in our backyard last evening with its prey firmly clenched in its talons. OUCH! I thought it was an immature Red-tailed Hawk until Michele Caskey mentioned the possibility that it might be a Cooper's Hawk. She's right on. That long tail is a good clue to its identity. Red-tailed Hawks have shorter, more rounded tails. Its yellow eyes and brown coloring indicate that it's a juvenile. Adult Cooper's Hawks have a steely blue-grey coloring above and red eyes.
