Invasive species
Spring Lake is not alone in its efforts to remove unwanted fish. Last week, in Central Park NYC, I spotted several signs like this one posted around one end of the park. The Northern Snakehead Fish is native to China, Russia and Korea but has no natural predators in this country. There are strict guidelines to follow if you catch one, including a call to 311. An aggressive fish considered to be a threat to the ecosystem, it can survive on land for several days, breathing air and using its fins to crawl across land to get to a body of water. In China, it's considered a delicacy and is served with noodles.
Let's increase our efforts to remove the Pike, Bullheads and Hybrid Bluegills as we fish the lake this spring and summer. Check out Greg Langenfeld's fishing guide and photos to help you identify the Hybrid Bluegill. Directions for disposal of these fish are included.
