On the large, westernmost island, Jane Kraus spotted a pair of green herons in one of the trees--the first time we've had a sighting of more than one. Could there also be a nest up in that tree? It's said that these birds typically build their nests in a large fork of a tree, and over water. Created from sticks, the nests are usually 8-12 inches across, with a shallow depression. So next time you venture out on the lake, take your binoculars and look for that nest! Bullheads are one of several fish these Herons like to eat. Welcome to the "bullhead buffet" on Spring Lake.
Jane also captured this proud mama duck guarding her young ducklings. Great shot!
