For much of the day, I thought we had a heron in need of medical attention. He appeared several times at the shoreline, walking ever so slowly as he waded in the shallow water searching for fish. Not unusual, really, except that his left wing was drooping each time he appeared. He would walk the shoreline until he was out of sight, then show up again several hours later, wing still drooping. Was the wing broken? Not necessarily, it turns out. Open-wing feeding and drooped-wing sunning are typical behaviors for herons, apparently, so I'm hoping this is what I witnessed.
Watch for him!
